For many, getting the chance to see SCA founder Liz Cushman Titus Putnam again, or meet her for the first time, was one of the reasons alumni came to the event. What they didn’t expect was an afternoon filled with artifacts from their crews and reuniting with old friends.
Olympic National Park and Washington State SCA alumni were welcomed by SCA Vice President for Western Initiatives Jay Satz and President Dale Penny on July 26th to a program that brought both tears and laughter from the audience and speakers alike.
Recognition was both given and received between SCA and Olympic National Park celebrating the 50 year partnership. With over 50 attendees, the event was one filled with sharing and reminiscence of everyone’s SCA experience. From listening to 1957 SCA alum to the members of the high school crew which are currently serving in Olympic National Park, there were moments of intrigue, understanding, and admiration.
50 years after SCA started, when asked about their SCA experience in Olympic, students still give remarks about the mud, the hard work, and perseverance that makes living in this temperate rainforest such a remarkable experience for everyone who passes through.
While some attendees chose to go on a naturalist-guided hike in the morning, even more alum couldn’t get enough after the event was over and gathered at a local restaurant for a bite to eat and continued merriment well into the evening.
